Le status

All,

Please watch the video and make comments!!! I really like it and Jane did a great job editing it together, she’s totally the bomb. I have another week’s worth ready to go now but I will have send it, have it edited, etc. Should be about a week before it appears.

The reason the tweets have gone from frequent to seldom/never is that the iphone is broken. It has a dead spot on the touch screen which occurred after a full day under my rain jacket being bathed in my sweat. The dead spot is in the exact place where you slide your finger across to unlock the phone, though sometimes it works if I hit a strip just above it. However this is also the spot that contains the zxcvbnm keys, and backspace. It makes typing on the phone pretty much impossible without those keys. So I’m a bit screwed :-(. I’ve tried drying it out, but this didn’t work and I’m going to try cleaning it with alcohol. If any dilligent person wants to research on the internet ways to fix this and then send me a solution I’d greatly appreciate it but I don’t really have the time or cash to do it.

To tie up some loose ends, I’m in Nancy, FR, in the Lorraine. Every few days I eat out and get to experience whatever region I’m in. Today, inspired by the Anthony Bourdin book “Kitchen Confidential” (highly recommended if you like food/Tony), I ate “Traunche de tete de veau avec some-sorta-brown-saus”. Translated: Piece of head of veal with some-sorta-brown-sauce. I strongly recommend that if you are ever in France and confronted with choices like these, EAT THEM. Seriously. Sweetbreads, belly of pork, head of veal, they are actually amazing. And the food comes perfectly prepared because they know you have BALLS.

My knee is sort of a daily problem. It gets worse with the mileage, better on days off, and I’m always aware of its “existence”. It’s basically going to cause me to take the train to catch up and meet Werner in time, and there have been a few difficult days as I have come to terms with that. It still feels like cheating.

Other than that I’m still alive and kicking. I will try to get to a computer more often but it’s a tradeoff between doing that and being in the world, I assume you all understand my preference given my usual habits.

Cambridge to Sarajevo: How to Keep Up With Me

T minus 2 days. I am feeling very ill at the moment but hopefully it will clear up by the 9th, the official start date. I have pretty much everything in place except that I haven’t actually done much cycling since before exams, so the plan is to take it easy for the first few days until I get to the ferry.

One of the most interesting aspects of this trip is that it will give me a real chance to disconnect and unplug from the world before being reconnected 24/7 at Google. I decided a while ago I wasn’t going to bring a laptop or much in the way of gear, but I still wanted to have an engaging experience for my audience (you guys) as well as a way to remember what I did. Along those lines I decided to pare down the gear to two items: a small digital camera (not my normal massive Canon DSLR) and an iPhone.

To record the trip I will be shooting a bit of photos and mostly video on the camera which I will snail-mail to my lovely assistant who will stick them together in a video format and then send them off to you, my loyal readers via YouTube. I will preserve the photos and post them separately on Flickr when I return. I will also try to squeeze together the activities of a day in to one or two text updates sent to Twitter. My blog will change to a special page for the duration of the trip so that you can follow it more easily.

So to recap:

  • Videos posted weekly with highlights and lowlights of the trip
  • Twitter daily or so.

Catch you in 5 weeks!!!
